Barkha Gate

Much of India’s oligolpolistic big media (Bennet and Coleman, NDTV, IBN, Hindustan Times, Indian Express have till now refused to substantially/totally cover barkhagate, a scandal that showed how journos act as fixers), DNA had a great piece. Among others  New Indian Express, Huffington PostWall Street Journal, Governance Now have covered the news with pertinent takes.  Times of India commented but did not refer to Niira Radia’s communication with Times Group’s senior Editor, Navika, Kumar Jain. Sunday Guardian referred to Barkha Dutt’s links to CONgress party. There was also this Hitler parody.

Perceptive Blogger Barbarindian captured his take through two blogposts (1 and 2).

Long time media observer Shri S Sudhir Kumar ended up asking key questions to Barkha Dutt and Vir Sanghvi. for which no answers have been located till date: Set 1 Questions,  and Set 2 Questions. This was when Vir Sanghvi, Barkha Dutt brazened it out and tried to obfuscate the issue. Crooked men like Amartya Sen that earlier endorsed blood sucker Mohumad Yunus again came to barkha dutt defence.

Network 18 group companies who have been more severely indicated by Radiia tapes Rajdeep Sardesai, IBN Editor-in-chief was also directly implicated telling Niira Radia that he does not have money for vacations – Audio at 0:30. No wonder Rajdeep abused his Press Council position and came out rationalizing Barkha Dutt despicable behavior. Worse CNBC news-hosts were implicated in punting – Check Audio 17:01 onwards.

Post Script:

  1. Barkha Dutt had earlier come under ZIM scanner when truth pertaining to Mumbai Terror attack covered in online version of Vanity Fair Magazine was suppressed
  2. NDTV’s hastily drafted rebuttal on Open Magazine’s posts were shown to be falsification of communication. Further there were news reports by Sunday Guardian capturing finance frauds perpetrated by NDTV. Financial frauds, Chicanery using ICICI bank.
  3. IBN was caught manifesting deceit by Dalal Posterous and by Blogger Swathi.

The new high came in 1999 Kargil War. Channels brought this war right into our living rooms. While the men in uniform covered themselves with glory in the battlefield, a hero was born or should one say a Heroine of the small screen no not the glamorous kind. A news reporter who became the visible face of the 24 x 7 News Channels!

She won our hearts and ruled our minds. We became her slaves believed every word she uttered as gospel truth. Then came a minor shift in 2002, became a little more slanted in 2004, gradually the slant became more steep, which compelled me to scrutinize what was being said on the channel and compare it with others in electronic media and also with the print.

Good summation Anil. ABV cabinet, Cabinet Secretary, Defence Ministry, I & B Ministry all had a role in nurturing NDTV monster. Reminds one of Bhasmasur.

        Thank you so very much.

I would be happy if you were to read the other 35 blogs and share your views.

Media & politics is of special interest to me.

        Individuals do not matter.

This is quite an analysis. I think she should be at least stripped off Padma Shri. I know the govt. wouldn’t so we must spread the word out at our levels.

Secondly, I also found this video interesting on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjm_TOhNIxc

Can we get a ZIM analysis on that as well? Thanks.

As an ordinary Indian whose primary source of information is the Electronic and the Print media in the country, which form the basis of a considered decision to support or oppose a political party or a combination, is severely affected due to motivated reportage.

Barkha symbolises what happens when fame gets on head and changes into hunger for power. she does not deserves her Padmashree, people have already stripped her of it. many of my friends no longer watch her programes. I myself saw a restuarant owner changing her show and cracking jokes on her. this is loss of TRP for NDTV. as many media people say about censor board :- ” let people decide”. they can end her career.

    Very well summed up.

Another news that has come out is MJ Akbar’s Sunday Guardian reporting on NDTV’s financial dealings.

The worst thing about this episode and Barkha Dutt esp. is that many young people esp. girls adore her and wanted to follow her.
